This basil simple syrup is every bit as simple as the title says! Basil has such a versatile and refreshing flavor—savory, sweet, whatever, I put basil on just about everything! I even have my own little basil plant sitting in my window so I always have it on hand.If you’re like me, then you will love this basil syrup.

What is a simple syrup?

A simple syrup is made using equal parts water and sugar that are boiled together. You can easily flavor simple syrups by infusing them with flavor. In this case, we are infusing the simple syrup with basil!

But you could easily swap the basil for any other herb or fruit zest. Think of the possibilities! Swap the basil for mint and make a mint simple syrup for mint juleps!

I love these bottles to make and store my simple syrup to have on hand!

How can you use this recipe?

This basil syrup is the perfect pairing for cocktails, lemonades (like my favorite strawberry basil lemonade!), sparkling water (HELLO, basil soda!), and sodas (I love pairing it with a citrus soda!). I even love drizzling a little bit of it on my fresh fruit or sorbets!

Basil Simple Syrup

Basil Simple Syrup

Prep Time 1 minute
Cook Time 4 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes


  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup washed basil leaves


  1. Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly until sugar is completely dissolved. Let the mixture simmer for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let cool in saucepan for 30 minutes.
  2. Pour syrup through a mesh strainer into an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 2 months.
